This wildly popular rum-based cocktail hails from Cuba. Pronounced “mo-HE-toe” and originally called The Draque when it was served on Cuban plantations as a combination of sugar, mint, limejuice, and rum served in a tall, thin glass, it is now a popular and refreshing cocktail served anytime and everywhere. The magic is in the mint, which should be crushed or mottled to coat the bottom of the glass, followed by the sugar, limejuice, and rum. Topped with seltzer water and ice and thoroughly stirred, it’s got all of the exotic flair of tropical culture—minus the need for a passport.
